Ionizing Radiation Exposure from Radiologic Imaging

چکیده

Background The increased use of diagnostic imaging requiring the use of “ionizing radiation,” the rapidly expanding use of computed tomography in the emergency setting, the introduction of multi-detector CT units and newly reported concerns related to the human consequences of low-level radiation exposure have revitalized a long-standing concern over the quantification and management of an individual’ s cumulative “medical” radiation exposure.1,2,3 Studies have shown that many physicians, including radiologists, have developed a misconception that the shorter imaging acquisition times have resulted in lower doses of radiation, when in fact many times the opposite is true. The multi-detector CT units today, even with shorter scan times, expose patients to higher doses of radiation per scan than earlier units.

Computed tomography dose optimization.

Use of computed tomography (CT) as a medical diagnostic imaging tool has increased in recent decades because of its technical advances in data acquisition speed and image reconstruction technology. The increased reliance on CT was accompanied by increased patient exposure to ionizing radiation, however, and concerns among radiologic professionals and the public regarding CT dose resulted in inc...

Does Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?

MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields.  While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and h...

Improvements in Diagnostic Techniques in Medicine with Lower Exposure of the Patient and Staff

It is a well known fact that radiation doses from the use of ionizing radiations and radionuclides in medical diagnosis and treatment are the largest contribution to the collective dose from all man-made sources of radiation, occupying about 15% of the total collective dose, and rapidly increase over the world, due to their relatively high frequency. From this, it is obvious that medical use of...

MR imaging in abdominal emergencies.

The use of MR imaging in the emergency setting is evolving. Clear indications include situations in need of contrast media when iodinated contrast cannot be administered or to facilitate assessments in pregnant patients and children when exposure to ionizing radiation is considered unacceptable. The availability of rapid, motion-immune sequences now makes MR imaging a feasible study in less coo...

Cumulative radiation exposure dose of diagnostic imaging studies in breast cancer patients

Background: Breast cancer is a common disease in radiation oncology. We evaluated the radiation dose received by breast cancer patients, an often-neglected concern. Materials and Methods: The total effective radiation dose in 101 breast cancer patients was calculated by summing the effective doses of individual diagnostic imaging tests from the first hospital visit to the initiation of radiothe...
